Chimney stacks are some of the most exposed brickwork on any property. Constant rain, wind, frost and temperature changes can gradually break down mortar joints, allowing moisture deeper into the masonry and accelerating deterioration.
GOLD BRICKLAYING provides specialist chimney repointing throughout Norwich and Norfolk. We assess the mortar, bricks and overall condition of the stack before deciding on the correct approach, using materials and repointing methods suited to the age and construction of the chimney.
From traditional lime mortar chimneys on period properties to modern brick chimney stacks, our focus is on durable masonry work that protects the structure and preserves its appearance.
Mortar joints are the first line of protection between the individual bricks in a chimney stack. Once they become deeply weathered, cracked or loose, water can penetrate further into the masonry.
Because chimney stacks are exposed above the roofline, deterioration can progress faster than on more sheltered walls.
Signs that a chimney may need repointing include:
• Crumbling or missing mortar
• Deeply recessed mortar joints
• Cracks through the pointing
• Loose sections of mortar
• Damp or water penetration around the chimney
• Frost-damaged or spalled bricks
• Previous pointing beginning to fail
• Vegetation growing from open joints
Early repointing can often preserve otherwise sound brickwork before deterioration develops into more extensive chimney masonry work.
Good chimney repointing is not simply a new layer of mortar applied over old joints.
Failed mortar needs to be carefully removed to a suitable depth so the replacement mortar can properly bond within the joint. The brickwork must also be assessed for damage before repointing begins.
We look at the chimney as a complete masonry structure — not just the visible mortar.
If individual bricks have deteriorated, they can be replaced as part of the work. If the stack has significant movement or structural failure, repointing alone may not be the correct solution.
The objective is always to carry out the work the chimney actually needs rather than covering over an underlying problem.

Many older chimneys throughout Norwich and Norfolk were originally constructed using traditional lime mortar and relatively soft bricks.
These materials need to be treated differently from modern masonry.
Where appropriate, we use compatible lime mortar that allows traditional masonry to manage moisture and movement naturally. Using an unnecessarily hard modern mortar on older, softer brickwork can contribute to deterioration of the surrounding bricks.
The correct mortar depends on the age, condition, exposure and original construction of the chimney.
For a more detailed explanation of traditional mortar, visit our Lime Mortar Repointing Norwich page.

Not every deteriorated chimney needs rebuilding — and not every deteriorated chimney can be solved by repointing.
If the brickwork remains stable and the main deterioration is within the mortar joints, repointing may significantly extend the life of the stack.
Where bricks are extensively damaged, sections have become unstable or the chimney has started to move, more substantial masonry work may be required.
Depending on the condition of the chimney, GOLD BRICKLAYING can undertake:
• Chimney repointing
• Individual brick replacement
• Localised chimney brickwork restoration
• Partial chimney rebuilding
• More extensive chimney stack rebuilding
Being able to carry out both repointing and structural masonry work allows us to recommend a solution based on the actual condition of the chimney.

Every chimney is assessed individually before work begins.
We consider the condition of the existing mortar, the type and condition of the bricks, previous repairs, exposure and the overall stability of the stack.
Where repointing is appropriate, deteriorated mortar is carefully removed without unnecessarily damaging the surrounding brickwork. The joints are prepared and repointed using mortar suitable for the existing masonry.
Particular care is taken with older brickwork, where aggressive removal methods or inappropriate mortar can cause unnecessary damage.
The finished pointing should do more than improve appearance — it should become a compatible and durable part of the existing masonry.

A chimney stack experiences some of the harshest conditions on a building.
Unlike many external walls, it is exposed from several directions and sits above the roofline where wind-driven rain and frost can have a significant effect.

Unlike many external walls, it is exposed from several directions and sits above the roofline where wind-driven rain and frost can have a significant effect.
Deterioration can also be accelerated by:
• Ageing mortar
• Saturated masonry
• Freeze-thaw cycles
• Failed previous repairs
• Hard cement mortar on softer brickwork
• Damaged bricks
• Deteriorated flaunching or surrounding chimney details
Finding the cause of deterioration is important. Repointing the visible joints without considering the condition of the wider chimney can leave the underlying problem unresolved.

GOLD BRICKLAYING is not limited to cosmetic pointing.
Our work covers traditional repointing, brick restoration, chimney masonry, structural brickwork and rebuilding. This broader masonry experience is particularly important with chimneys, where failing mortar can sometimes be only one part of the problem.
Whether the chimney requires careful repointing, replacement bricks or more substantial masonry work, we assess the structure first and recommend an appropriate solution.
We work on modern homes, Victorian and Edwardian properties, cottages and other period buildings throughout Norwich and Norfolk.

Real workmanship matters.
Our chimney projects include repointing, brick replacement, restoration and rebuilding of weathered chimney masonry on properties across Norwich and Norfolk.
The photographs on this page show our own work and the condition of the masonry before, during and after restoration.

Look for deeply weathered joints, loose or missing mortar, cracking and sections where mortar can easily be removed. Damaged bricks or movement in the stack may indicate that additional masonry work is required.
Well-executed repointing using suitable materials can last for many years. Lifespan depends on the condition of the existing masonry, exposure, mortar type and quality of workmanship.
No. If the chimney remains structurally sound and deterioration is mainly within the mortar joints, repointing may be sufficient. More extensive movement, damaged masonry or instability can require partial or complete rebuilding.
If your chimney mortar is deteriorating, the first step is establishing whether the stack needs repointing, brick replacement or more substantial masonry work.
